The Pendant Light Topan is a classic of European design, created by the Danish design icon Verner Panton. The Topan came onto the market in 1959 and was originally designed for the Norwegian Astoria Hotel and Restaurant in Trondheim, where it was more than just a lamp: as so often, Panton had developed a holistic colour concept and coordinated interior design, in which the designer light played an important role.
For the Danish designer, choosing colours was always a deliberate process, as colours fulfil an important function in design through the emotional effect they evoke. It was above all the combination of the simple geometric form with its poppy colours that made the Topan so popular in the 1960s and 70s, and for decades now it has impressed with its simple, graphic design. Incidentally, the Topan was Panton’s first light to go into series production, making it a forerunner of the equally famous FlowerPotlamp.
The modern Topan
&tradition now gives the Topan a contemporary look – as a tribute to Verner Panton, the master of colour: it is now available in matt white, matt black, mustard, red-brown and light blue. With this colour palette, the Topan designer light fits flexibly into a wide variety of settings and creates a pleasant atmosphere wherever it hangs.
The shade of the globe light is made from a single piece of aluminium by experienced craftspeople. It measures 21 cm in diameter and 19 cm in height. Open at the bottom, it emits direct light – Panton liked to position it very low. Hanging close above the table prevents any glare and shows off the form at its best. The harmonious look of the Topan VP6 is rounded off by the long fabric cable from which it hangs. It works well – in private and public spaces alike – as a single decorative light element or hung in clusters, and it looks particularly chic in a row above a counter or sideboard.
